PRESS RELEASE: North Kentville Couple Charged with Animal Neglect

Kentville, NS (January 17, 2017) The NS SPCA has charged a North Kentville couple with animal cruelty after completing an investigation involving emaciated sick cats.

In early October 2016 while investigating a complaint from the public, SPCA officers exhumed two cats from a shallow grave at the rear of an apartment complex in North Kentville.  The remains were sent to the pathology lab at the Agricultural College in Truro for necropsy.

Melissa Martin and Roy Slaunwhite have both been charged with causing an animal to be in distress; contrary to section 21(1) of the Animal Protection Act of NS, AND failing to provide an animal with adequate medical attention when an animal is wounded or ill; contrary to section 22(b) of the Animal Protection Act of NS. Both are scheduled to appear in Kentville Provincial Court on February 14, 2017 for arraignment.
