PRESS RELEASE: Criminal Code Charges Laid after Man Drowns Litter of Kittens

Posted on: Thursday, September 14th, 2017

Kentville, NS (September 14, 2017) –  In late July the NS SPCA received concerning information from the public about the possible disappearance of a litter of kittens. SPCA officers investigated the concern and it was later determined that the litter of kittens had been intentionally drowned by their owner.

Daniel Walter Friesen of Aldershot, Kings County, has been charged with willfully without lawful excuse killing kittens; contrary to section 445(a) of the criminal code.  Friesen will be arraigned October 24, 2017 at the Kentville Court House.

The NS SPCA offers a variety of low cost spay / neuter programs across the province for owned pets. Additionally, the NS SPCA introduced the P.U.P. program (Preventing Unwanted Pregnancies) which finds homes for the kittens and provides a spay surgery for the mother to prevent future litters.  The SPCA also runs a TNR (trap, neuter, return) program which spays/neuters feral cats at no cost to the colony caretaker.

Drowning kittens is never an option, especially with so many resources available to the public. To find out more about how the SPCA can help, please visit spcans.ca or contact your local SPCA shelter.

The NS SPCA operates on a policy of zero tolerance for animal cruelty and sets the standard of animal care for the province of Nova Scotia. The NS SPCA urges you to report acts of animal cruelty by contacting our confidential toll free hotline at: 1-888-703-7722
