PRESS RELEASE: Nova Scotia SPCA and Spay Day HRM acknowledge HRM City Councils’ support of TNR efforts

Posted on: Thursday, April 28th, 2016

Dartmouth (April 28, 2016) –  The Nova Scotia SPCA in coordination with Spay Day HRM are pleased to acknowledge that HRM council has approved a $50,000 grant on April 26 2016 to support the spaying and neutering of feral cats.  Together we extend our genuine thanks to HRM Council for their unanimous support of this initiative.

We believe ignoring the feral cat problem is inhumane. “We both advocate the humane treatment of all cats including those that are stray and those that have become feral” says Linda Felix, Spay Day HRM.  A feral cat is one that has never had contact with humans and that is the offspring of abandoned or unaltered free-roaming cats.  “A feral cat is not friendly, and is not a cat that can be adopted.  Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is the humane and effective approach to controlling the cat overpopulation crisis” states Elizabeth Murphy, CEO of the Nova Scotia SPCA.

This grant will enable local rescues groups; Spay Day HRM and the Nova Scotia SPCA in combination with the public’s help to tackle the cat overpopulation crisis through targeted spay/neuter efforts of feral cats. If you have a feral cat that is in need of spaying or neutering please report it via our survey located online at

We have compiled a list of cats in need of help based on survey results received to date. We encourage members of the public and rescue groups to provide us with more information by registering cats in need of assistance from this spay/neuter project.

Please contact us at  or 844-835-4798. We are also looking for additional volunteers to help with trapping, transporting and caring for the cats while they recover from their spay/neuter surgery – contact either The Nova Scotia SPCA or Spay Day HRM for more details. Donations of food would also be appreciated.
