PRESS RELEASE: Nova Scotia SPCA Receives Grant of Nearly $40,000 from PetSmart Charities® of Canada to Support Subsidized Spay/Neuter Surgeries Across the Province

Posted on: Thursday, January 4th, 2018

Dartmouth, NS—Jan. 10, 2018– The Nova Scotia SPCA (NS SPCA) has been awarded a $38,785 grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada to help provide subsidized spay/neuter surgeries for owned pets across the province of Nova Scotia in celebration of World Spay Day. The 24th annual World Spay Day takes place on Feb. 27, 2018.

Research shows that a fixed cat or dog is less likely to want to go outside and roam, less likely to fight with other pets and less likely to display other nuisance behaviors like territorialism and inappropriate urination.  Many pet parents may want to do the right thing for their pet, but may not have the financial resources required to do so.

“At PetSmart Charities of Canada, we understand that spay or neuter procedures can be costly for some pet parents and families,” says Dani Mailing, regional relationship manager.  “That’s why we’re committed to making these vital procedures more accessible and affordable by providing spay/neuter grants to animal welfare organizations like the Nova Scotia SPCA.”

“Last year we saw the overwhelming need for help from the public and the feedback from participating families in the subsidized spay/neuter program was very inspiring. We are extremely appreciative of the support we receive from PetSmart Charities of Canada, which allows us to make a positive impact on the lives of pets while also helping to prevent further pet overpopulation in our province,” says Elizabeth Murphy, CEO of the Nova Scotia SPCA.

Subsidized spay/neuter procedures will be performed at one of the NS SPCA’s two veterinary hospitals located in Dartmouth and Sydney Cape Breton. Various pet pick-up locations will be scheduled and communicated across the province to ensure all pet parents have access to this program and transportation assistance for their pet to receive care at the Dartmouth or Sydney hospitals.Owners requiring spay/neuter assistance are invited to apply now online at: http://spcans.ca/spca-vet-services/world-spay-day/
