The Nova Scotia SPCA Colchester Branch was founded in 1986 and was based purely on volunteers and foster. Finally after many years of hard work and fund raising the dream of opening a shelter become a reality in 2002.

The number of cats in need in the Colchester area was far greater then we had originally anticipated. As the shelter opened their doors with only 26 cages. It became apparent that we needed more cages to house these cats. Since opening our doors we have nearly tripled our cage numbers, allowing us to hold up to 71 felines at a time. The shelter also has the ability to house up to 8 dogs, with access to an outdoor kennel system and outdoor play pen. We do have a great foster care program that enables us to help animals that need more care then regularly required such as extra socialization, medical treatment and nursing mothers and their litters.

Each and every animal that comes into the shelters care is examined by a veterinarian, tested for diseases, vaccinated, and if they are 6 months or older they are spayed or neutered before leaving for their forever home.  We provide as many opportunities for adoption as possible, such as adoption events and off site adoptions. This allows us to find the best possible home for our animals. If a home in our area is not found we are able to transfer them to another branch.

The Colchester Branch relies heavily on the support of many local businesses and individuals. We operate on minimal staff so the need for volunteer involvement is great. Our volunteers have scheduled shifts for Kennel Duty and Dog Walking and we are frequently looking for new recruits.

The Colchester SPCA is a happy place full of animals who love to socialize and play. If you’re looking for some animal snuggles drop in to see us.
