Animal control

The extent to which municipal animal control or animal services departments provide support in communities in Nova Scotia varies. Some animal control departments will pick up stray dogs and deliver them to a kennel or shelter that will house the dog until it can be claimed by its owner. Some branches of the Nova Scotia SPCA have contracts with their municipality to provide kennel and adoption services for dogs picked up by municipal by-law enforcement animals.

Most municipalities in Nova Scotia do not provide assistance with stray cats unless a cat is injured, in distress, pregnant, or causing a disturbance or property damage.
