Advocacy and Education
The Nova Scotia SPCA seeks to educate the public, and our volunteers and staff, about responsible animal care and how to develop humane, compassionate relationships with animals. The Society also reports on the state of animal welfare in Nova Scotia and advocates for changes and improvements to current practices to improve the well-being of animals.
How you can help:
- Write a letter or send an email to your MLA or MP to voice your support for better animal cruelty legislation at the provincial and federal level.
- Get informed. Read the position statements of the Nova Scotia SPCA and our articles on animal welfare issues.
- Join the Education or Advocacy committees as a member, or contact the committees to find out what volunteer opportunities are available and to offer your assistance.
- Write letters to the editor of newspapers when stories about animal cruelty appear in the news.
- Learn about what other organizations, such as the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies, are doing to increase public awareness and push for improved laws.
- Write a newsletter article for the Nova Scotia SPCA on a topic you are passionate about.
- Become an outreach volunteer to help the SPCA spread the word about animal welfare to the younger generation through school and youth group presentations, and to the public at large by attending public events on behalf of the Nova Scotia SPCA.
- Donate to the Nova Scotia SPCA to help the Society further its work in animal cruelty investigation, education and advocacy, and sheltering and re-homing of domestic animals.

First Annual Nova Scotia SPCA Poster Contest
Check out the entries from kids in grades primary to six for our first annual poster contest, which took place in March 2009. Participants were asked to create a poster based on the themes "what being kind to animals means to me" or "how the SPCA helps." Click on the slideshow below to view all the entries. Please note that a few entries are not included because they were larger than our flatbed scanner.
