Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Is the Nova Scotia SPCA a government department?
A. NO! The Nova Scotia SPCA is a registered charity. In 2009, the Department of Agriculture provided the Nova Scotia SPCA with a one-time grant of $100,000 to support cruelty investigations; however, the Society receives ongoing funding of only $3,000 a year from the Department of Agriculture for investigating allegations of cruelty relating to farming operations. The rest of our funding for cruelty investigations comes from individual donors like you!
Q. If I donate to the Nova Scotia SPCA, where does the money go?
A. Donations made to the Nova Scotia SPCA can be made directly to the Provincial Society to support cruelty investigations or to the Provincial Animal Shelter or one of our other ten branches. However you choose to give, your donation helps to support animals in Nova Scotia.
Q. Is the Nova Scotia SPCA registered under Joint Stocks as other charitable organizations are?
A. The Nova Scotia SPCA is incorporated as a Society under the Animal Protection Act, which enables the Society as a charitable organization to perform animal cruelty investigations and mandates the Society to protect animals from cruelty, abuse and neglect. It is not permitted for an organization to duplicate their registry under two Acts, namely the Societies Act and the Animal Protection Act.
